Pound Hill was originally a hamlet within the parish of Worth. In 1809, an act of Parliament established a turnpike between Horley and Balcombe, which passed through Pound Hill. This road, now known as the Balcombe Road, entered the parish from the north and turned east at the top of Pound Hill, following the Crawley to Turners Hill road. After a short distance, the road then turned south along Church Lane in Worth. The houses and farms located around the Pound Hill junction eventually became known as Pound Hill. However, due to its close proximity to Worth Church, Pound Hill never fully developed into a village. The busy turnpike and the steep hill leading down Church Lane made it difficult for wheeled vehicles. To address this issue, a new road was built directly south from Pound Hill junction, bypassing Church Lane and connecting to the old road near Frogshole Farm at the bottom of the hill.
